Why every Kathak student starts with tatkar

Tatkar is the first footwork pattern a Kathak student learns. It looks plain. A foot strikes the floor in a steady rhythm, hands rest at the waist, and the body stays upright.

What it actually builds

Tatkar teaches you to feel the beat in your feet, to keep time without counting out loud, and to stay balanced while moving fast. Every chakkar, paran and tukde you learn later depends on it.

How long it takes

Some students stay with tatkar for a few months. That is normal. A clean, even tatkar is worth more than a rushed advanced piece.

Practising at home

  • Practise on a firm floor, barefoot or in ghungroo once permitted.
  • Begin slowly and increase speed only when every strike is even.
  • Practise a few minutes daily rather than long sessions once a week.
